The park is located 160 km from Nairobi and 70 km from Naivasha; The most convenient mode of transport is a car from Nairobi can also be reached by a fixed-route taxi (Matata), a Lunatic Express train or a small airplane, but only in the dry season.
The city of Nakuru is located north-west of Nairobi in the African Rift on the shore of the lake of the same name, which is its main attraction. Alkaline Lake Nakuru is a part of the system of eight lakes of the Great Rift Valley and is known for a huge variety of birds, especially notable among them are pink flamingos, pelicans and cormorants. In good weather, over a million pink flamingos can fly to the lake.
Being primarily a bird sanctuary, Nakuru is also home to a black rhino and boasts the largest leopard population in Kenya. Still here you can see a warthog, a hippopotamus, a lion, a Thompson gazelle, a water goat, a buffalo and a giraffe.
